The Mongoose and the Iguana     ©Ann Mason May 2006

The Crested Iguana is an endangered species of Fiji which may have, as the Fijians themselves did, once travelled from far away, across the Pacific Ocean, to settle on the islands thousands of years ago. In more recent times another traveller from a distant land, the mongoose, has been brought to Fiji to assist in the control of rats infesting the sugar cane fields. The mongoose along with another introduced species, the goat, have been identified as being the underlying cause for the near extinction of the rare and unique Crested Iguana of the Fijian Islands.

Discover the reasons why the mongoose was brought to the Fijian Islands. Its introduction has had a considerable impact upon the sensitive natural environment and indigenous animal species of the islands. Conservationists have endeavoured to resolve the problems but have these methods been affective to ensure a sustainable future for the islands is possible? Sustainable processes are peace-building and ensure happy win-win endings for everyone involved, especially the animals. Imagine and create some creative solutions that could also be used throughout the world. Story sharing can become a powerful process in supporting any change in people's thinking and behaviour.
