The Mongoose and the Iguana     ©Ann Mason May 2006

The mongoose was introduced to the Fijian Islands in 1883 to help eradicate rats in the sugar cane fields. As with so many other stories about introduced species these stories tend to not end happily. The introduced species often disturb the delicate balance existing within the natural environment and serious consequences result.

Stories like these need to explore sustainable processes and resolutions or endings in which areas of natural habitat can be protected and indigenous species no longer become dangerously close to extinction.

Help determine realistic happy endings to these stories and help ensure indigenous species and their natural habitats in your own regions are not threatened. Animals which have been introduced may need to be eradicated but in ways that are humane. In what ways can you personally prevent indigenous species in your region from becoming extinct?
