Activity 1

The story of How Paper and Ink Came Together and Survived to Sing About It has been accompanied by beautiful songs each possessing a unique rhythm. Children can create dance steps for some of the songs that reflect the mood of the song and interpret its meaning and match its tempo. Whilst doing this they can explore steps that each character might possibly be able to do if the song is related to their role in the story. For example: Ms Bzzz would be able to include steps that indicated she was flying whereas Black Ink would have to be bound to the Earth. The real creatures could be observed and their different movements noted before the choreography was planned. The two characters mentioned also have six legs whereas others in the story do not. The performances could be videoed and shared beyond the classroom or accompany other performances in relation to the story.

Activity 2

The story of How Paper and Ink Came Together and Survived to Sing About It can be restructured and rewritten as a play (visual-spatial) with different scenes established. Children can be choose to perform the character roles, be responsible for sets and music accompaniment, or be responsible for advertising or ticket sales. The story could also be narrated using the original version and the character roles mimed. The performances could also be videoed and shared beyond the classroom.

Activity 3

The story of How Paper and Ink Came Together and Survived to Sing About It can be restructured and rewritten as a play (visual-spatial) with different scenes established. Children can be choose to retell the story using puppets or create masks to wear and act out the story as it is narrated. The story can also be retold using clay animation. Any performances could be videoed and shared beyond the classroom.

Activity 4

The story of How Paper and Ink Came Together and Survived to Sing About It lends itself to be retold with rap music and hip hop. Having emerged with a style more concerned with the content of its message than the constructs of its art form rap music incorporates rhyming lyrics spoken rhythmically over musical instruments, with a musical backdrop of sampling, scratching and mixing. Rap's origins began in African oral traditions and involves spoken rhymes about street life to the beat of DJ-manipulated drum machines and turntables. Break dancers and graffiti artists provide a dramatic and colourful visual style to accompany the beats and narratives. A definite challenge for interested and talented students would be for them to set this story to rap and hip hop. The performances could be videoed and shared beyond the classroom.
